The name skolecite is derived from the Greek word "skolex" (worm), as skolecite bends like a worm when heated in front of the soldering tube. Spellings such as scolecite, scolezite, skolezite, skolozite or skolecite are therefore incorrect. Other names for the mineral are ellagite. Fiber zeolite, flour zeolite, needle zeolite and weissianite; an obsolete synonym is calcareous mesotype.
