Lovingly engraved selenite rabbit with numerous details

Selenite was already known to the Romans and was used as a window pane instead of glass, as Glass could not yet be made flat and transparent at that time. In the encyclopaedia "Naturalis historia", Pliny the Elder (23 - 79) described the mining and use of selenite. The Romans called the mineral "lapis specularis", i.e. "mirror stone". The name selenite is derived from the Greek goddess of the moon, Selene.
The mythological significance of the hare can be traced back to antiquity: As a much-hunted animal, but one that defied danger time and again thanks to its speed and numerous offspring, the long-eared hare became a symbol of vitality and courage very early on. In the world of the Greek gods, the hare was associated with Aphrodite, the goddess of love and fertility.
